No messing about here, let's get baking...
Serves 10
Ingredients
Base
- 75g Oatmeal
- 85g Unsalted Butter (dairy free alternative)
- 95g Plain Flour
- 3tbsp Water
Filling
- 1kg, Peeled, Cored, and Thinly Sliced Cox apples
- ½ the Juice of a Lemon
-1/4tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1 cup Unsweetened Applesauce or stewed apples
- 1tbsp Unsalted Butter (dairy free alternative)
Method
- For the base add the butter to a medium pan over medium heat and cook until nutty brown in color, make sure to keep mixing so the bottom doesn't burn. Once the butter has browned, add the ground oatmeal, flour and water, and mix to combine. Let cool for 5 minutes.
- Transfer the mixt to a 20 cm tart tin, and gently press and spread out the crust mix evenly across the bottom and up the sides. Be patient as you're spreading the mix, it will even out eventually. Chill for 30 minutes.
- Pre-heat the oven to 190˚C Fan and prepare the filling.
- To make the filling place the prepared apples in a large microwave-safe bowl and squeeze the lemon juice over, then toss to coat with the cinnamon. Microwave for 1.5 minutes. Cover with a plate and let steam for 3 minutes. You want to soften the slices but be careful they don't turn too soft so you can't layer them.
- Spread the applesauce over the bottom of the crust to make an even layer.
- Starting from the outside and working inward, arrange the apples on top of the apple sauce in a circular pattern with the curved side up. Begin with the larger slices, overlapping slightly, and continue until the entire crust is filled. Brush the apples with the melted butter.
- Bake for 1 hour, checking occasionally. Once baked remove from the oven and let the tart cool to room temperature on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
